The Rose Consort of Viols

Ayres and Fancies
The infamous Rose Consort takes us on a musical journey through Tudor and Stuart England. Performances of Henry Purcell's incomparable fantasias to celebrate the 350th anniversary of his birth, Interspersed with music by his English precursors.
The Rose Consort is devoted to the wonderfully rich English consort repertory and is unique in its use of traditional period instruments. The ensemble performs extensively throughout Britain, Europe and North America, appears regularly on the BBC and has made a number of highly acclaimed recordings.

Songmen of Sheffield Cathedral Choir

An exploration of music for men's voices, mainly of the French tradition. Music to include exquisite and sublime works by Francis Poulenc, and music by Thierry Echaich-Professor of Music at the Paris Conservatoire.

Sheffield Cathedral Choir are the city's only professional choir, with a reputation as being amongst the finest cathedral choirs in the land. As well as providing music for worship at the cathedral, the choir untertake concert engagements, regularly broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and have made a number of commercial recordings, all to critical acclaim.

The New Music Ensemble will perform works by leading avant-garde composers: The Italian Salvatore Sciarrino and German Helmut Lachenmann, as well as premieres of new works by student composers.

Rivoli Quartet
------------------------------------
The first of three concerts celebrating the bicentary of the birth of Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. The Quartet in F minor is considered his finest, composed shortly after the death of his sister, and not long before his own, this heartbreaking work is incredibly powerful and highly emotive.

Mendelssohn: Quartet in F minor, Op. 80
The Rivolis all hold Postgraduate Diplomas in Performance at the Royal Northern College of Music and have been awarded many prizes in regional chamber music competitions. They went on to be finalists in the 2006 Royal Overseas League Competition and recently won the Ravel Prize at the Académie Internationale de Musique Maurice Ravel. They have since been invited to participate in the master class series at the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove 2006 and the 28th International ?Master classes for String Quartets? course at the Britten-Pears School.

A rarely performed masterpiece; Honegger's symphonic psalm depicts one of the greatest Old Testament characters, in a work that is both exciting and dramatically engaging.

EVENING CONCERTS: £8, £5, (senior citizens/staff) and £2.50 (students,unwaged)
FREE LUNCHTIME CONCERTS: Admission is free and tickets are not required. These concerts are designed to be an informal, alternative way to spend part of a lunch hour and members of the audience may arrive and leave between items.
Complimentary wine and juice is available during the interval at all our evening concerts.
